King of California (2007)

I use Netflix. I have continually searched through it’s databases to find movies that look interesting and that might be entertaining. I thought I had found one in the movie titled “King of California“. It stars Michael Douglas and Evan Rachel Wood. It was released in 2007 and is rated PG-13 for some strong language, mature thematic elements and brief drug references. It runs 93 minutes long.

Synopsis:

A journey of an unstable father who is convinced he has found the location of lost Spanish gold.

Impressions:

While I do enjoy independent feeling films, this film was entirely too slow for the first 45 minutes of the film. I can understand the idea of getting to know characters, but the films pacing could have been sped up. The acting was extremely solid. Both Evan Rachel Wood and Michael Douglas are experienced and superb actors. They made their relationship seem real, and were relatable even in this extreme of circumstances. There were comedic moments throughout the film mostly by Michael Douglas. But most of the time the audience would be laughing at his antics, not with him.

Final Say:

If you like independent films, and you like quirky comedies, this film is for you. It is entertaining enough, but I would not recommend it to a regular film watcher.

Rating: 6/10
